KOMODO : Here Be Dragons

by GoAsia

16-10-1 BBTF 2020 - Newsletter1In Nusa Tenggara the map can still be marked with the words “Here Be Dragons”, for the bony outcrops of land that rise from the seething seas between Sumbawa and Flores are truly home to reptilian monsters, seemingly raised from the land of legends. Known to the locals as “ora” and to the rest of the world as Komodo dragons, these giant monitor lizards, some growing over 10 feet (3 meters) in length, live only on Komodo itself, the neighboring island of Rinca, a couple of other little outcrops, and in isolated spots in western Flores. They usually prey on the unfortunate deer, buffalo and wild horses that share their territory.
